About the Department

The mission of the building department is to protect the lives and safety of the residents of Oxford Township, preserve the township’s quality of life and contribute to the township’s economic development. To this end, the building department will strive for excellence in educating its employees to provide quality inspections and customer service.

The building department is responsible for issuing all building permits and oversees the required inspections for existing and new construction projects and the enforcement of building and zoning codes to ensure quality development. We also review permanent sign applications, commercial tenant change of occupancy and land use permits.

The planning & zoning department coordinates applications to the planning commission and zoning board of appeals. We serve as the township’s primary point of contact for citizens, developers and members of the business community with questions regarding the township’s zoning ordinance and land use regulations.

Why are buildings inspected during construction?

It is the only way to independently verify that the building will meet the minimum standards adopted by the State of Michigan. Before a home, office or store can be occupied and utilized, an average of 20 inspections are made to verify everything conforms to electrical, safety, sanitation and structural standards.

Why should minimum safety codes apply to my own home?

Several reasons:

  • For the safety of your family and guests.
  • To ensure the economic well-being of the community by reducing the potential spread of fire and disease.
  • For energy conservation.
  • To protect future home purchasers who deserve reasonable assurance that the home they will buy is safe. On average, a home is resold every 5 to 7 years.
Is there a permit required to install my lawn irrigation system?

Yes! A plumbing permit and inspection are required. The permit is issued by the township. The permit fee is $115.
